Visual Rhetoric of the Refugee Condition and the Technological Objects They Carry

Karina Stiles is the author of Materialising Exile, a study of the material culture of a refugee population. She will speak to us about how the experience of displaced peoples finds expression in the belongings they take with them into exile.

To put you in the right frame of mind for her talk, we’d like you to read Edward McCaughan’s recent survey of artwork reflecting on the US-Mexico border, “‘We Didn’t Cross the Border, the Border Crossed Us.‘” This is a long article, so focus first on the artworks, then on what McCaughan has to say about several of them.
